  In early 2020, copies of a modest blue booklet began to appear in coffee shops, venues, museums, bookstores, and other cultural hubs across the planet. What began as a small volunteer-run effort to share an out-of-print handbook from the 1980s turned into a global distribution network, beginning in Western Canada and spreading to New York, Chicago, Halifax, Toronto, London, Paris, Berlin, Tokyo, Oslo and Nairobi. The COVID-19 pandemic halted efforts for further distribution, but copies have now been made available for individual or group purchase.
  
  While the contents of the booklet remain IRL only, the opening passage has been approved to share as an abstract for the curious:
  
  WHAT IS THE FIELD GUIDE?
  What you are holding in your hands is a volunteer produced copy of a document distributed by the founder in 1982. A small run of 100 booklets was left in coffee shops, bars, venues and other cultural hubs around London and New York, and became highly sought after through word of mouth. While many of the originals have been lost to time, volunteers for the des hume initiative (d.h.i.) began producing copies with the founder’s blessing.
  
  If this is the first that you have heard of our organization, we welcome you to engage with this document to understand the core tenets that guide our work. Our members are committed to achieving a utopia for mankind and have spent the last 30 years making significant advances through cutting-edge scientific research, artistic development, observation and selective outreach.
  
  This text explores many facets of modern living and is presented in simple list form in order to be accessible to all those who discover it. It represents a lifetime of experiential wisdom, unconventional philosophy and curiosity, and those who follow it are said to be walking the true path. We hope that you, as a reader, have the opportunity to engage with this text and walk the true path yourselves.
