Need You Now

about

‘Need You Now’ is the first single from ‘bub’ - a record about co-dependency, toxicity, and the mixed blessings of empathy. It was written following the breakdown of a serious relationship that ended intensely and messily and charts the stages of grief through to eventual recovery and moving on. I’ve always been uncomfortable with breakup records, since they isolate the narrative to the singer, but I’ve tried to avoid the pitfalls of assigning blame and focus on the universal experience of heartbreak. Above all, the music is danceable. The world doesn’t need another mopey breakup record from a sad white man - I’m hoping you can bob your head through this one.

lyrics

I was a young man
with my heart on my sleeve
and I ran into your arms
without taking a moment to breathe
you became all that i had to lose
so now that it's breaking, I've got no foundation
to keep me from clinging to you

I need you now
I need you now
(more than I ever thought that I would)
(more than I ever thought that I would)
more than I ever thought

You wrote me all the words I wanted
since day one
still it's not enough to wash away
all of the problems
but
what can I say?
you blinded me once and I know that
it's only your way
get under my skin and control it
it doesn't matter to me,
when I get you stuck on my mind
all that I can think is
that I need you

I need you now
I need you now
(more than I ever thought that I would)
(more than I ever thought that I would)
more than I ever thought

..and then, you come back to
the place we got together and I hoped that you would
stay
it was on your way
to come collect your records and your books and then
you leaned in and caught my lips
(or at least that's how I've imagined this to go)
cause it seems I

I need you now
I need you now
(more than I ever thought that I would)
(more than I ever thought that I would)
more than I ever thought
