On June 9, 2022 the des hume initiative was invited to give a performance at the group show 'At A Distance', hosted in the interior design space Vancouver Special. For the duration of the 3 hour opening the founder performed an improvised piece from inside of a small camping tent, joined in hour 2 by Miguel Maravilla (@yellowmiguel). The performance was recorded direct to cassette tape, and is presented here without edits or overdubs.
A statement from the Founder:
"I've admired Miguel's work for some time, but we haven't had the opportunity to collaborate until now. This was a perfect moment to get to know each other musically - experimenting in front of an audience, learning each others process, making mistakes and occasionally stumbling upon beauty."
An overview of the piece:
SIDE A - initiation. The Founder uses nature sounds and gentle synth washes before conducting a number of experiments including: a reading of a Betty Crocker cake recipe, a spontaneous cover of 'Teardrop' by Massive Attack, and sampling room sounds and conversation from the audience.
SIDE B - focusing. Approximately 1 hour into the performance the Founder is joined by Miguel Maravilla. There are a few moments of gentle ambience while the setup is explained before the energy is focused.
SIDE C - bliss. The pair operate without speaking, feeding back off each others contributions. A state of truly free experimentation results. Joyful noise is abundant. Ideas come, build and go while washing into next directions.
SIDE D - Approaching the 3rd hour the energy becomes more refined, and the piece gives way to a gently undulating wave of echoed nature sounds and looped vocals. The pair exit the tent while sounds repeat at random.

Eighty per cent of WISH participants are homeless, half of them are Indigenous. All live in poverty.
